“The productive sector is already suffering the effects of tariff changes”

Nazaré da Costa Cabral, during a parliamentary hearing regarding the State Budget for 2026 (OE2026), emphasized that the Portuguese economy has shown a “favorable performance in recent years, accompanied by very favorable employment rates.”

However, it is crucial to pay attention to “certain risks that have been intensifying recently, particularly the risk related to changes in trade policy and also difficulties in terms of reconfiguring supply chains,” she warned.

The official noted that “currently, the productive sector is already experiencing the effects of tariff changes, the reconfiguration of trade policy, and supply difficulties faced by companies.”

Concerning supply chains, the economist highlighted that there are “difficulties in supplying chips, raw materials, and other components, largely coming from China to European companies, which may soon affect the economic activity of companies and their operational capacity with the risk of social impacts, such as layoffs or even collective redundancies.”

In the name of reindustrialization and reducing the American trade deficit, Donald Trump announced new surcharges on products entering the United States (US), ranging from 10% to 50%, depending on the situation and the country involved.

The United States Supreme Court began reviewing the legality of President Donald Trump’s tariffs this Wednesday, in a lawsuit filed by companies and Democrat-governed states that may undermine the federal government’s economic and diplomatic policy.
