“The PS can never be placed at the same level as Chega. PM has to decide”

“The Socialist Party (PS) can never be placed on the same level as a party that threatens democratic values, and if the Prime Minister cannot distinguish that political and social representation, then the Prime Minister is not equipped to define and defend the national interest,” stated José Luís Carneiro to journalists after the meeting of the PS National Political Commission, which convened today in Lisbon.

According to the PS leader, if Luís Montenegro maintains his stance as he did last Friday, “this means a rupture with the Socialist Party.”

“The Prime Minister must decide with whom he wants to build state solutions, sovereignty solutions, and the Prime Minister must have historical awareness and must remember what the Socialist Party, the PPD, and the CDS stand for.”

He emphasized that these “are the parties that built freedoms, rights, and fundamental guarantees,” and casting any doubts on this matter signifies that the Prime Minister is not up to the responsibilities he is undertaking.

José Luís Carneiro asserted that “the Prime Minister will have to decide what he wants to do.”

“I admit that there is still room to backtrack, but he will have to explain to parliament what the principle of agreement was that the Chega leader referred to days ago when leaving a meeting with the Prime Minister. What does this principle of agreement consist of? What are the terms of this principle of agreement? The one who needs to answer this is the Prime Minister,” he challenged.

On the controversy over the demolition of shanties in Loures, the PS leader reiterated what he had already said on Tuesday afternoon in Beja and also to the Lusa agency.

On that day, José Luís Carneiro expressed understanding of the difficulties faced by municipalities dealing with precarious constructions, but called for balanced solutions “with humanism and social sensitivity” in resolving disputes.

Regarding the meeting of this PS body, José Luís Carneiro concluded that “the Government is failing in all its political priorities,” such as health, education, income policy, and economic policy.

“Moreover, the idea that the Government committed a grave mistake, the impacts of which are yet to be assessed, in the alliance made with Chega concerning nationality laws and the foreigners’ law,” he condemned, asserting that the AD “fell into Chega’s arms on this matter.”

Referring to the letter sent to the Prime Minister on Defense, the PS leader mentioned that “the Prime Minister did not respond to any of the questions that were raised.”
