‘The Psych Ward Street’ premieres at the Portimão Municipal Theatre.

An original creation featuring music, libretto, and direction by saxophonist, composer, and researcher Rodrigo Pires de Lima has been announced by the municipal executive.

The show features the Lisbon Saxophone Orchestra, led by Pedro Tavares, and performances by Rita Maria and Catarina Sá Ribeiro, all under the stage direction of Cláudio da Silva.

Rodrigo Pires de Lima is credited with creating “an artistic project that blends theater, music, and psychology with a modern, intense, and deeply human language.”

The composer, who holds a doctorate from the University of Minnesota, USA, is known for creating works that “challenge the boundaries between genres and disciplines,” with ‘The Psych Ward Street’ being another “example of his multidimensional artistic vision.”

The narrative revolves around Karen, a woman with multiple personalities who believes she is living in an ordinary neighborhood but is actually confined in a psychiatric hospital, explains the Portimão City Council.

Throughout four chapters, Karen introduces her imaginary neighbors: Susanne, an obsessive cat lover; Joe, a seducer in crisis; and Sarah, fascinated by kitchen tools, presenting a delirious and captivating portrait of her inner world.

In the final chapter, a moment of clarity reveals to Karen that her neighbors are mere creations of her mind, resulting from a medication lapse, according to the statement.

Featuring original music for saxophone orchestra, drums, and voice, and an English libretto, “Rodrigo Pires de Lima creates a sound universe that alternates between humor and absurdity, introspection and liberation,” the statement describes.

“The result is an intense, surprising, and emotionally rich show, inviting audiences to dive into a world where the boundary between reality and imagination dissolves to the sound of deeply expressive musical writing,” the municipality highlights.

Tickets are available online at BOL and at the TEMPO box office for 12 euros.
