An official from the Prosecutor General’s Office has confirmed the existence of an inquiry concerning an incident at a courthouse, which has been placed under judicial secrecy.
The incident reportedly occurred at the end of February, as several defendants awaited trial in a common area of the court for summary proceedings. According to a source familiar with the matter, speaking on condition of anonymity, one individual was violently restrained by officers from the Public Security Police (PSP) under circumstances that remain unclear.
The PSP has stated that, in the course of this inquiry, one officer was subjected to an initial judicial interrogation and has been immediately suspended from duties.
“Concurrently, an internal disciplinary process has also been initiated regarding the officer involved,” the PSP noted in a written statement dated April 30, withholding further details due to the ongoing judicial investigation.
The General Inspectorate of Internal Administration (IGAI) has confirmed that an administrative process was activated following a communication from the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Last week, the external police oversight body was reportedly awaiting additional information.
In statements made today, the presiding judge of Lisbon’s district court, which includes the Almada Court, remarked that while he would not disclose specifics, the situation is “regrettable but thankfully isolated.”
“There is no other comparable incident,” assured Judge Artur Cordeiro, emphasizing that the matter “was addressed immediately.”
