The sea economy represents one-fifth of Cape Verde’s GDP.

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the maritime economy reached 20.1% of the national GDP in 2023, marking an increase of two percentage points compared to 2022, according to the statement on the Maritime Satellite Account.

The document highlights that the group of activities related to leisure, sports, culture, and tourism made the largest contribution to national production, accounting for 10.3% and 12.0% of the national total in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

This is followed by activities related to ports and logistics, with fishing and fish processing ranking third.

In terms of employment, maritime activities linked to tourism also dominate, followed by fishing and processing.

The Maritime Satellite Account of Cape Verde aims to highlight the sea’s importance in the overall economy. This project was funded by Spanish Cooperation and received technical support from Portugal’s National Statistics Institute (INE) and the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC).
