At 2:45 PM Lisbon time, the Dow Jones index dropped by 0.27% to 45,974.33 points, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq increased by 0.10% to 22,065.54 points.
Meanwhile, the broad S&P 500 index settled at 6,585.38 points, down 0.03%.
The Trump administration has requested a court of appeals to remove Lisa Cook from the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors by Monday, ahead of the central bank’s discussion on lowering the benchmark interest rate.
At the same time, Republican senators are seeking to confirm Stephen Miran, a Trump nominee, to fill a vacancy on the Board.
Trump aimed to remove Cook on August 25, but a federal judge ruled on Tuesday that the removal was illegal and reinstated her to the Board.
Trump had accused Cook of mortgage fraud, claiming she listed two properties as “primary residences” in July 2021 before joining the Board of Governors. Such a declaration could result in a lower loan interest rate and reduced payments compared to declaring one of the homes as a rental or secondary residence. Cook denied the allegations.
