The Constitutional Court intends to prevent the PSD and CDS from running in elections under the coalition name ‘Aliança Democrática’, as the PPM is no longer included.
Last week, when announcing the PSD/CDS coalition, PSD parliamentary leader Hugo Soares stated that the ‘Aliança Democrática’ designation would remain on the ballot for the upcoming legislative elections on May 18. However, the PPM disagreed and brought the case to the Constitutional Court, which is also against the use of the name, considering it might mislead voters.
A PSD source confirmed to Diário de Notícias that the party has already been notified of the decision, which was not unanimous. According to Visão, who first reported the information, the situation led to an intense debate among the judges of the Constitutional Court, who eventually agreed to reject the name.
The PSD and CDS will now have to choose a different designation for the new coalition that no longer includes the monarchist party. It should be noted that, at the end of last week, the PSD and CDS announced in daily newspapers that the coalition in the mainland and Madeira would be called ‘AD – Aliança Democrática – PSD/CDS’, but this might now be subject to change.
The monarchists revealed that before the failed negotiations with the social democrats and centrists for a new coalition for the upcoming legislative elections, they warned both parties about the possibility of registering the ‘Aliança Democrática’ brand in coalition with another party, but chose not to do so for ethical reasons.
