Actress Sara Matos is set to star in the television series ‘Marquesa de Alorna’, which focuses on writer Leonor de Almeida Portugal. The series, under production until mid-July, is announced by production company Ukbar Filmes.
‘Marquesa de Alorna’ is a six-episode series for RTP, inspired by a biographical novel by Maria João Lopo de Carvalho about Leonor de Almeida Portugal (1750-1839), a writer, educator, and translator whose poetic work was published posthumously.
“From the convent in Lisbon to the extravagant court of Vienna, we will uncover the secret stories of a fearless Marquesa that led to the awakening of a woman: first loves, first betrayals, the birth of children, first losses,” reads the synopsis.
The series is directed by Tiago Alvarez Marques, known for the series ‘Madre Paula’ and the upcoming ‘Cold Haven’. The script is crafted by Pandora da Cunha Telles, Mário Cunha, Cláudia Clemente, and Rafael do Carmo Afonso.
In addition to Sara Matos, the cast includes Sandra Faleiro, Cristóvão Campos, Albano Jerónimo, Joana Solnado, Rita Rocha Silva, Soraia Chaves, and Miguel Borges, among others.
Shooting began in late May, spanning locations such as Lisbon, Almeirim, and Salvaterra de Magos (Santarém).
In 2023, at the Iberseries co-production forum in Spain, producer Pablo Iraola from Ukbar Filmes emphasized to Variety magazine the importance of narrating the story of the Marquesa de Alorna, stating it “provokes reflection on the role of women in society, not only in the past but also in the present.”
“Despite the enormous changes in our world, women still face a continuous struggle to claim their rightful place in a patriarchal society,” the producer remarked in 2023.
‘Marquesa de Alorna’ is co-produced with Spain’s Tornasol Media, in partnership with RTP.
