The Centro Dramático de Évora (CENDREV) is set to host a three-day event at the centennial Teatro Garcia de Resende in Évora, aimed at fostering dialogue among creators, companies, and institutions from Portugal and Spain.
This year, the festival shifts focus to Galicia, a region in Spain, known for its vibrant artistic and theatrical scene, described as one of the most stimulating in the contemporary Iberian landscape, according to CENDREV in a statement.
Serving as a platform for artistic exchange, critical reflection, and cultural cooperation, the event invites audiences to enjoy performances that depict the diversity, humor, and poetic strength of current Galician theater.
The event kicks off on Sunday at 4:00 PM with the theatrical performance “A Dream” by August Strindberg, a recent co-production by CENDREV and A Escola da Noite from Coimbra, which debuted last week.
Directed by António Augusto Barros, who also collaborated on the set design with João Mendes Ribeiro and Luísa Bebiano, the play “A Dream” features a cast of 11 actors and actresses, with music by Carlos Meireles and lighting design by António Rebocho.
On Monday at 3:00 PM, the conference “The Example of the Centro Dramático Galego as a Contribution to the Reflection on Regional Development Models” takes place.
This gathering intends to provide a shared reflection on the role of cultural institutions in contemporary artistic creation, the balance between public policy and creative freedom, and the common challenges faced by Portugal, Spain, and specifically Galicia, as outlined by CENDREV.
Scheduled speakers include the Director of the Centro Dramático Galego, Fran Nuñez, musicologist Rui Vieira Nery, the Vice-President of the Alentejo Regional Coordination and Development Commission Ana Paula Amendoeira, Pedro Rodrigues from A Escola da Noite, and Luis Miguel González Cruz from Teatro del Astillero.
Later that day, at 7:00 PM, actor Quico Cadaval, a pivotal figure in the Galician scene, will perform his show “Oedipus Complex.”
Cadaval crafts a narrative that merges classical tragedy with the traditional storytelling of the fireplace, epic theater, and literary cabaret, where a tavern keeper in a Galician port — also the mother of the soliloquist — comments on the fate of the unfortunate Oedipus amid roast meat recipes, sailors’ tales, and echoes of the Spanish royal family, as unveiled by CENDREV.
The event concludes on Tuesday at 7:00 PM with a performance by Centro Dramático Galego, Galicia’s public theater company, celebrating its 40th anniversary.
Presenting “The Clopen Series,” directed by Pablo Reboleiro with dramaturgy by Clara Gayo and Pablo Reboleiro, the CDG offers a multidisciplinary creation combining acrobatics, physical theater, clowning, dance, and humor, reflecting on the challenges of youth during uncertain times.
