The Public Security Police (PSP) has issued an alert to drivers regarding the adverse weather conditions expected in the coming days, which increase the risk of road accidents. The police emphasized the importance of using safety devices, noting a rise in related infringements.
According to the PSP, the adverse weather conditions forecasted by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) heighten the “risk of road accidents, making the mandatory use of safety devices (seat belts and other restraint systems) an important measure that can help protect vehicle occupants’ physical integrity and even save lives.”
The law enforcement agency stated that with the “current adverse weather scenario, failing to use or improperly using seat belts, as well as neglecting to use other restraint systems, can contribute to fatalities in skidding and collision incidents.”
The PSP advises drivers to always use seat belts and certified child restraint systems, to adjust driving to adverse weather conditions and road conditions, to refrain from using mobile phones, and to maintain vehicle conditions properly.
