Faro is under an orange warning due to “showers occasionally strong and accompanied by thunderstorms,” from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. today. The same alert is in effect in Setúbal for similar reasons during the early hours until 9:00 a.m.
On Saturday, the orange alert will be active in Faro, Setúbal, and Beja between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. due to “persistent rainfall, occasionally strong and accompanied by thunderstorms.”
All districts of mainland Portugal and the Madeira archipelago will be under a yellow warning for various reasons – maritime agitation, wind or rain – during different periods until Saturday.
The orange alert is issued by the IPMA whenever there is a “moderate to high-risk meteorological situation,” and the yellow when there is a risk for certain activities dependent on the weather conditions.
Up to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, mainland Portugal recorded 2,106 incidents due to bad weather, resulting in two fatalities, one minor injury, and four people displaced, according to the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC).
In statements to Lusa, ANEPC operations officer José Costa said that until 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, the agency had recorded “2,106 occurrences across the mainland” due to adverse weather conditions caused by the influence of Storm Claudia, intense and persistent rains, strong winds, and maritime agitation.
According to Costa, the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region registered the highest number of incidents, with 1,196, followed by the Central region with 477, the operations officer noted.
In the northern region, 130 incidents were recorded, in the Algarve 203, and in the Alentejo 100, he added.
