Collectible coins, valued at five euros, are currently in circulation, as noted by DECO PROTeste, who advises consumers to exercise caution.
“There are five-euro coins in circulation, but you are unlikely to encounter them regularly as they are collectible items“, states the consumer protection organization.
The organization recalls that “throughout 2024, six five-euro coins were issued, among other collectible coins with face values of 2 euros and 7.50 euros, with a so-called ‘normal’ finish.”
“The coins were distributed through banks, other credit institutions, and the treasuries of the Banco de Portugal, as well as at shops of the Imprensa Nacional – Casa da Moeda. For 2025, the release of two new two-euro coins is already planned,” the statement continues.
However, consumers should be aware that “despite the issuance of five-euro coins, five-euro banknotes will not be replaced. You are also unlikely to find these new coins frequently in circulation as they will be issued in limited quantities.”
Three precautions to take:
- Does the five-euro coin hold the same value as a five-euro note? “Yes, the five-euro coins introduced in 2024 have a face value of five euros, meaning they are worth the same as a five-euro note,” explains DECO PROTeste;
- What should I do if I receive a collectible coin as payment? “If you receive payment or change in a collectible coin, you can use it as long as it is accepted as legal tender. The value of collectible coins is the same as that of regular coins and banknotes,” notes the organization.
- How do I know it’s not a counterfeit coin? DECO PROTeste reminds that “the characteristics of each of these collectible coins are available on the Banco de Portugal’s website. To detect a counterfeit coin, check various security features of the coin; do not rely on just one. Pay special attention to the reliefs, edges, and magnetic properties of some coins.”
