The final parliamentary debates before the summer recess, set to resume in September, addressed key issues occupying the Portuguese agenda, including immigration, TAP, healthcare, teachers, and pensioners.
During the State of the Nation debate, various topics were discussed. Among announcements, the extension of travel allowances to all teachers and an additional benefit for pensioners were highlighted. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro asserted that he would “not waste any of the four years” of the legislature, acknowledging that there is still more to accomplish.
Beyond the heated topics, there were also exchanges among deputies, accusing each other of ‘boasting,’ with authors cited throughout the discussion and even criticisms directed at the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco. According to Pedro Delgado Alves, in an opinion that concerns him alone, Aguiar-Branco “lacked the courage to defend the chamber and deputies against the far-right.”
As the debate concluded, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Carlos Abreu Amorim criticized the Socialist Party, pointing out difficulties in reaching agreements with this faction.
