The National Republican Guard (GNR) issued a warning on Tuesday, in a statement sent to Notícias ao Minuto, regarding the issue of missing elderly individuals.
“The disappearance of elderly people is a phenomenon that the Guard has been particularly attentive to, not only in the effort to locate the missing but especially in preventing such incidents,” the military authorities emphasized in the same release.
In light of this, if there are elderly individuals in the family, several pieces of advice are recommended to prevent such incidents:
- Family members should be aware if the elderly are still in full physical and mental capacity to leave home alone without running the risk of getting lost.
- Families should seek to know the routines of the elderly and have information about where they intend to go when they leave home, so that if the return is delayed, they can start searching there;
- Whenever possible, the elderly should carry a mobile phone with them to contact or be contacted by their family members, and in case of disappearance, be more easily located through cellular tracking;
- The elderly should always carry their family members’ contact information so that if they become disoriented, others can reach out to them.
