There are more customers in the free electricity market: How many are there now?

The liberalized electricity market recorded approximately 5.7 million customers, with an estimated consumption of 44.9 terawatt-hours (TWh) in July, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 2.1% in customers and 7.6% in consumption.

According to the data released by the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE) today, the liberalized electricity market gained more than 9,797 customers in July compared to June, while the regulated market lost 3,207 customers, totaling 825,897.

Additionally, during this month, about 79,000 customers switched suppliers within the liberalized market, and 4,000 customers shifted from regulated to liberalized supply.

At the end of July, consumption in the liberalized market accounted for 94.9% of the total consumption recorded in mainland Portugal.

In terms of market share, EDP Comercial maintained its position as the leading operator in the liberalized market in both customer numbers (59.7%) and consumption (37.7%).

In the industrial client segment, EDP remained the top supplier in terms of consumption share (26%), with Iberdrola leading the supply for large consumers (26%).
