The Ministry of Education is facing numerous complaints from parents and guardians due to a shortage of school places, reports the Portal da Queixa this Wednesday. Issues related to school enrollments account for more than 30% of complaints this year, with preschool and the 1st year of Basic Education mentioned in 80% of cases.
The complaints arise as the academic year is about to begin, with recurring issues regarding enrollments and a lack of spaces in schools and daycare centers.
The Portal da Queixa has accumulated a series of complaints citing problems in the enrollment process. This issue has caused about 32% (31.82%) of formal grievances addressed to the education authorities since the start of the year, making it the most cited issue. It includes difficulties with the Enrollment Portal and the lack of student placements.
Among the educational levels most frequently mentioned in complaints, preschool (daycare centers) and the 1st year of Basic Education account for 80% of cases, followed by the 3rd cycle with 16%, and the 2nd cycle with 4%.
According to the data analyzed by the Portal da Queixa, other reasons for complaints within the Ministry of Education include inappropriate conduct within the school community, indicated in 17% of reports from parents and guardians. These describe alleged “mistreatment, bullying, misconduct, and lack of education” by school staff.
“Next are issues in administrative/school management – problems with equivalencies, school/group transfers, reevaluation of academic processes, and issues with certificates from Brazil – which accounted for 16% of the cases reported this year,” reads a note sent to newsrooms today.
Financial support problems prompted about 12% of the complaints, generally related to non-payment of grants, lack of tuition reimbursement, and delays in the payment of subsidies or merit scholarships.
