There is a support (of up to 800€ per hectare) to help with land clearing.

Did you know there is support available, which can reach up to 800 euros per hectare, for land clearing? This is part of the Floresta Ativa program and the applications are open until August 1.

Thus, landowners and producer organizations can apply until the start of next month for a support program for forest land clearing and management, with a six million euro grant for non-reimbursable financing.

In mid-June, the Ministries of Environment and Energy and Agriculture and Sea announced that the Floresta Ativa program is aimed at the clearing, management, and enhancement of forest lands on the mainland, funded by the Environmental Fund and implemented by the Institute of Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF).

How the Program Works

The program, with funding of six million euros, will be divided into two phases, following the “evaluation of the pilot project Forest Vouchers” and was developed within the intervention plan for the forest 2025-2050.

The first call for applications started on June 2 and extends until August 1, through the ICNF digital platform (https://fau.icnf.pt), and foresees “support of 650 euros per hectare for individual applications and 800 euros per hectare for collective applications”.

“Eligible interventions aim at cleaning, improving, or natural regeneration of forest stands, to ensure horizontal and vertical discontinuity of the fuel load, and these areas must be maintained, for a period of three years, in good vegetative and sanitary condition,” the note states.

The measure is part of the national strategy for rural fire prevention and the enhancement of the forest bioeconomy.

For the Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, quoted in the note released at the time, the Government “is valuing those who take care of the forest and creating solutions for the entire mainland territory based on public investment, resilience, and future.”

“Floresta Ativa is an example of how we put the resources of the Environmental Fund at the service of landscape protection, fire safety, and forest profitability,” she added.

The Minister of Agriculture and Sea, José Manuel Fernandes, also quoted in the statement, emphasized that “Portugal has more than 3 million hectares of forest, a vital resource that requires integrated management, based on technical knowledge, innovation, and public awareness.”

“Forests are not only an environmental heritage; they are fundamental pillars for the economy, territorial cohesion, and the country’s sustainability,” he concluded.
