Mercadona, which already operates over 60 stores in Portugal, announced on Thursday that it will open its first supermarkets in the city of Lisbon in November. These locations will be in Alta de Lisboa and Quinta do Lambert (Lumiar). The Frielas store, in Loures, also in the Lisbon district, will open in October.
The two new stores in the capital will generate 180 jobs, as indicated in a statement received by Notícias ao Minuto. The Spanish brand is already recruiting for these stores, with more details available here.
“The open positions for these stores are for supermarket operators and maintenance assistants. All employment offers include a training period with a permanent contract and are compensated from the first day. Additionally, during this period, all expenses, including meals, transportation, accommodation, and bi-weekly trips home for all employees, are covered by the company,” the company explained.

Frielas store opens in October
In addition to the stores in Alta de Lisboa and Quinta do Lambert, Mercadona will also open a location in Frielas, Loures, “finishing the year with a total of 10 stores in the Lisbon district“.
Operating for five years in Portugal, Mercadona reveals having created 7,000 jobs, “all through permanent contracts from the first day and offering attractive salaries”.
“In 2024, Mercadona invested a total of 219 million euros in Portugal, reached a sales volume of 1.778 billion euros, and contributed 237 million euros in taxes through the Portuguese company Irmãdona Supermercados, based in Vila Nova de Gaia (Porto),” the statement read.
For 2025, the company plans an investment of over 157 million euros and the opening of 10 new stores.
