E-REDES has announced a series of planned power outages for Sunday, November 9, affecting seven municipalities to conduct “localized work on the distribution network”. To avoid issues with appliances, it is advisable to unplug them.
Pedro Silva, an energy expert at DECO PROteste, explained that “in principle, nothing will happen” as it is a “scheduled maintenance where power restoration is done cautiously, and the network operator carries responsibility for potential failures and damages”.
However, there is a slight chance of a “power surge that may damage some devices”, hence DECO PROteste advises consumers who wish to be cautious to “unplug their equipment”.
Pedro Silva acknowledges the inconveniences of power cuts but explains that “it’s impossible to cut and work on cables while the current is still flowing”, stressing that “there was no other way”.

The scheduled interruptions aim to perform “localized work on the distribution network”. “These interruptions involve maneuvers, connection works, repair or maintenance of network infrastructure whenever all possibilities of alternative supply have been exhausted from existing installations,” explains E-REDES.
“Power Cuts” on Sunday in Seven Municipalities Are “Regular” Situations
E-Redes clarified that the “scheduled power cuts” occurring on Sunday in areas of the municipalities of Lisbon, Oeiras, Sintra, Tomar, Faro, Lagos, and Olhão, due to network distribution work, are “regular” maintenance situations.
“It is nothing out of the ordinary,” stated a source from E-Redes, adding that “every Sunday similar work is carried out”.
According to the same source, the locations of the “scheduled cuts” due to “maintenance work” are always communicated in advance on the company’s website.
On Sunday, the cuts will affect some areas of the municipalities of Lisbon, Oeiras, Sintra (in the district of Lisbon), Tomar (district of Santarém), Faro, Lagos, and Olhão (district of Faro), between 05:00 and 11:00.
In a statement on its website, E-Redes explains that these are “scheduled interruptions, planned in advance”, with the objective of “ensuring the quality and reliability of electrical service”.
“Maintaining the continuity and quality of electricity supply is the priority of E-Redes. To achieve this, we perform localized work on the distribution network, necessitating the temporary interruption of power supply to clients,” the statement reads.
The affected municipalities this Sunday are Lisbon, Oeiras, and Sintra (in the district of Lisbon), Tomar (district of Santarém) and Faro, Lagos, and Olhão (district of Faro). The complete list can be found here.
