The National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) issued a warning to the public about potential floods and landslides as weather conditions in mainland Portugal worsen due to the passage of depression Cláudia.
Mainland Portugal and the Madeira archipelago will be under weather warnings starting today and at least until the end of Thursday.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) forecasts heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms across the region, wind gusts up to 90 kilometers per hour, and up to 110 kilometers in higher areas.
Marine agitation with waves between four and four and a half meters is also part of the IPMA forecasts, emphasized by the Civil Protection.
ANEPC notes the potential for urban flooding, floods from overflowing rivers and streams, landslides, and contamination of drinking water sources by debris from rural fires.
Recommendations include clearing drainage systems, driving cautiously on slippery roads, and removing animals and equipment from flood-prone areas.
Activities at sea and walks along the shore are also discouraged.
