Thermometers ‘hit’ 40ºC. Heat puts almost the entire country under yellow warning

A weather alert has been issued starting at 9:00 AM today in the districts of Lisbon, Leiria, and Aveiro, while other districts are already under alert.

All alerts will remain in effect at least until 6:00 PM on Thursday.

In Madeira, the South Coast and mountainous regions are also under a yellow alert until 6:00 PM today due to heat conditions.

The yellow alert, the least severe, is issued when there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on the weather.

The IPMA forecasts hot weather for today with generally clear skies, at times strong winds along the coastal strip north of Cabo Raso, and in highlands.

Setúbal is expected to be the hottest city on the continent, with a predicted maximum temperature of 40 degrees, followed by Lisbon and Santarém at 39 degrees.
