A man has been arrested by the Public Security Police (PSP) on Friday for robbery in Leiria, while another suspect remains at large.
The Leiria District Command of the PSP reported that the two suspects entered a construction site located on Travessa Wenceslau de Morais in Leiria. They allegedly confronted two workers there, demanding money to avoid stealing a drywall-cutting machine used by the workers.
To “meet the suspects’ demands,” one of the victims “went with one of the men to a nearby ATM machine.”
“Since the suspect remained hidden near the ATM, the victim took the opportunity to call the construction manager,” the statement reads.
The other suspect stayed at the construction site with the second victim and allegedly took 60 euros from them by threatening them with a knife.
“A few minutes later, the manager arrived at the construction site, where he surprised and restrained the suspect, handing him over to the PSP, who responded to the scene,” the security force stated.
The other suspect, realizing the activity near the construction site, fled to an unknown location. Efforts are underway to locate him. The PSP noted that this suspect “did not manage to take any amount of money.”
The arrested individual, a 53-year-old unemployed man, was held in the PSP cells in Leiria and was brought before the District Court of Leiria today, where he was remanded in custody under the most severe preventive detention measure.
