They robbed houses, tried to flee the country, and were detained by the PSP in Nazaré.

Two foreign women, aged 22 and 32, were arrested by the Public Security Police (PSP) on Friday, July 11, in Nazaré for committing residential burglaries.

In a statement, the PSP noted that, through information shared by the PSP of Loures, officers “approached two foreign women suspected of being involved in home burglaries.”

Several inquiries were conducted, revealing that these women had been identified for similar crimes since 2021, linking them to incidents in June 2025 in the Parque das Nações and Olivais districts.

The PSP further explained that the two suspects “attempted to flee the country” upon realizing they might be connected to other committed crimes. They were intercepted in Nazaré.

“Investigators were able to seize cash and clothing identified in CCTV footage of the burgled homes, among other evidence,” it was stated.

The authorities described the suspects as “members of an international criminal organization focused on itinerant property crime, particularly residential burglaries across the country.”

The detainees have appeared before a judge for a preliminary hearing and were remanded in custody.

It is noteworthy that, according to data released in June, the PSP recorded over 38,000 home burglaries in Portugal over the past five years, with 696 arrests.

Since 2000, there has been an average of 21 daily housing burglaries in Portugal.

Most burglaries involved breaking, scaling, or using false keys (20,234), with 9,320 cases where thieves used other methods and 9,273 where thefts occurred in areas adjoining homes, such as garages, annexes, or yards.

As for burglaries involving severe violence or threats to individuals, the PSP recorded 295 incidents last year.

The PSP reminds citizens that they can notify their absence at their local police station or via the website https://veraoseguro.mai.gov.pt/Pages/Home.aspx, ensuring that the homes receive special attention from the authorities.

How to Prevent Home Burglaries?

Our home is where we feel most comfortable and secure. Hence, the National Republican Guard (GNR) has made several recommendations to the public to prevent residential burglaries.

Note the Guard’s advice:

  • Do not allow suspicious or unknown people to enter;
  • Always keep doors and windows closed when leaving;
  • Keep phone numbers of trusted individuals and authorities nearby for communication in case of risk;
  • Install a peephole and a security chain on your door;
  • If absent from home for several days, inform the GNR or local police;
  • Do not leave notes on the door or windows indicating that you are away;
  • Ensure mail does not accumulate in the mailbox and install a secure lock.
