This is what you should do if you find a counterfeit bill or coin in your wallet.

Do you know what to do if confronted with a counterfeit or suspect banknote or coin? Let’s start with a critical point: “You should not, under any circumstance, attempt to pass counterfeit currency to others, as it is a crime punishable by law,” explains the Banco de Portugal (BdP).

This regulation is stipulated in the Penal Code, Article 265 and following, as noted by the banking supervisor.

Suspected Counterfeit Currency: What to Do?

“The ‘Touch – Observe – Tilt’ method is the appropriate and effective procedure for the public to verify the security features and determine the authenticity of a banknote. Nevertheless, you may encounter suspect notes,” explains the BdP.

The banking supervisor provides several suggestions if you doubt the authenticity of a banknote. Here are the recommendations:

  • If you have doubts about the authenticity of a banknote, do not accept it. Remember, counterfeit notes have no value; therefore, if you accept a counterfeit note, you will not receive any compensation.
  • Contact the Banco de Portugal if you need more information.
  • Politely request another note and assume the person presenting it is innocent. Inform them they might be in possession of a counterfeit note and suggest they visit local police authorities, a bank, or Banco de Portugal. In any case, never compromise your safety.
  • Immediately notify local police authorities or security services about the incident.
  • Try to record as much information as possible about the person who presented the suspect note.
  • If you believe you mistakenly accepted a counterfeit note, do not circulate it. Disseminating counterfeit currency is illegal. Surrender the suspect note to local police authorities, a bank, or the Banco de Portugal. If the note is genuine, you will receive your money back.
