This was Pinto Balsemão’s last intervention: “It’s not going to be easy”

The last political statement by Francisco Pinto Balsemão, made amid health challenges, occurred precisely 35 days ago, on September 16, when he issued a written message of support for the presidential candidate Luís Marques Mendes, the former leader of PSD.

The former Prime Minister expressed confidence in a victory for Marques Mendes in the presidential elections, though he cautioned that “it won’t be easy” with “candidates for all tastes” and “an overload of very close elections.”

“The mission ahead won’t be easy, with local elections along the way, a variety of presidential candidates for every preference, and a population still wounded by the calamity of the fires and the brutal accident in Lisbon with the painful consequences that we all regret,” he warned in a message addressed to the political committee of Marques Mendes’ presidential campaign.

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro remembered the party’s founder as a “symbol of the foundation” of PSD and recalled how he often challenged the party to “deepen social democracy.”

He announced the Government intends to declare a national day of mourning on the date of Francisco Pinto Balsemão’s funeral, who passed away today at the age of 88.
