Three injured in bus crash into a stop in Cascais

Three individuals sustained minor injuries Wednesday morning, July 23, after a bus collided with a bus stop in Cascais, confirmed the Lisbon Rescue Operations Command (CDOS) to Notícias ao Minuto.

The Public Security Police (PSP) reported that the vehicle, belonging to the Cascais Municipality, struck a bus stop where a woman and a baby were present, both treated on site, and an 84-year-old woman, who was transported to the Cascais Hospital, all with minor injuries.

The driver initially left the accident scene but returned later. As a result, the PSP issued a citation for failure to provide assistance.

The accident alert was received at 8:10 a.m. The site was attended by several Cascais firefighters and authorities.

“Driver’s behavior is, at the very least, shocking”

Meanwhile, numerous users on social media reported the incident, including Ana Castro, who shared photos and her account of the event.

The “M08 bus, approaching the stop on that street, completely destroyed the stop’s structure, where several people were waiting: a mother with a baby and two elderly individuals,” wrote the Facebook user, describing the situation as “unacceptable.”

“After the impact, bus passengers checked on the affected individuals. However, the driver’s behavior was completely irresponsible: he immediately displayed the ‘out of service’ sign and left the scene, without exiting the vehicle to assist the victims. This attitude is, at the very least, shocking and shows total disregard for human life,” she emphasized, mentioning the Cascais Municipality, to which the heavy vehicle belongs.

The user remarked that “this is just another shameful episode of a service that has exceeded all limits of negligence,” as “the Cascais municipal transport service is very lacking.”

“Complaints against drivers are numerous: they drive at high speeds, brake abruptly, use mobile phones without hands-free devices while driving, are often rude, do not adhere to schedules or respect people with reduced mobility,” she added in the same post.

With this report and situation, Ana Castro hopes for “consequences and that those responsible are held accountable—before a greater tragedy occurs.”
