Freemason leaders, Fernando Cabecinha of the Grande Oriente Lusitano, Paulo Rola of the Grande Loja Legal de Portugal / Grande Loja Regular de Portugal, and Anabela Valente of the Grande Loja Feminina de Portugal, have issued a strong and clear call for peace.
“We call for restraint, diplomatic dialogue, respect for International Humanitarian Law, and, in general, adherence to the principles and rules enshrined in the United Nations Charter.”
In their view, “peace is not a utopia. It is a collective responsibility. It is a conscious choice that demands political courage, leadership, ethics, and solidarity among peoples.”
Cabecinha, Rola, and Valente assert that “it is urgent to halt the logic of war escalation and reopen paths of negotiation, understanding, and reconciliation,” directing their appeal to “political leaders, international organizations, civil society, and citizens worldwide.”
The initiative arises in a context of “dark times and uncertainties.”
They detailed: “In different parts of the world, violence spreads, prolonged wars, geopolitical tensions, and humanitarian crises cause not only physical destruction of countries but the slow depletion of civilization and all achievements in human rights, principles, and values.”
Furthermore, they emphasized, “the implicit or explicit evocation of the potential use of nuclear weapons by some powers is an alarming signal and represents an unacceptable risk for humanity’s survival. No cause, no matter how legitimate it claims to be, can justify the risk of annihilating entire populations, repeating history’s tragedies, or devastating the planet we share.”
These three Masonic leaders concluded by announcing they will “exert all pressure along their international contacts to ensure this message is received and understood by decision-makers, especially the leaders of the powers involved in these conflicts.”
