Three soldiers were injured on Wednesday at the Paratrooper Regiment in Tancos following an “incident with a firework device,” the Army stated in a communication.
The incident occurred early in the afternoon, around 2:05 PM, involving a training grenade “during a logistical activity of separating casings and training grenades,” detailed the Portuguese Army.
The soldiers were “immediately assisted by the Unit’s nurse, and the emergency medical services (INEM) were promptly activated.” None of the individuals are in life-threatening condition.
One soldier received care at Abrantes Hospital and was discharged later in the afternoon. Another soldier, who sustained an injury to his left hand, “was transferred to São José Hospital in Lisbon for reconstructive surgery.”
An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances of the incident.

This incident follows the weekend death of a 24-year-old soldier at the Emergency Military Support Regiment in Abrantes, in the Santarém district.
“It is with sorrow and immense consternation that the Portuguese Army reports the death of a soldier, which occurred early this morning at the Emergency Military Support Regiment in Abrantes,” reads a statement sent on Saturday to the Lusa Agency, adding that the Military Judicial Police had been notified.
“The deceased soldier was 24 years old and was from Tabuaço, Viseu,” it also notes.
