A forest fire occurred in the Via Panorâmica Pablo Neruda — Aldeia dos Capuchos, an area within the protected zone of the Arriba Fóssil da Costa da Caparica, Almada, Setúbal district. The alert was raised at 05:45, as announced today by the PJ.
The police reported that the arrest followed communication from the GNR after two witnesses observed the incident.
The Criminal Investigation Department of Setúbal PJ’s on-call unit was activated, initiating the investigation.
The PJ stated, “During the investigative proceedings, the suspects were identified. It was found that as they walked to Costa da Caparica to purchase drugs, they attempted to set fire to some bushes with a lighter, initially without success.”
“A few meters on, using direct flame again, they succeeded in igniting fires at three distinct locations, which quickly spread,” the report noted.
All these actions were observed by witnesses, according to the PJ.
The emergency services, activated by the GNR, prevented the fire from escalating further.
The detainees, who have criminal records for property crimes, will face initial judicial interrogation for the application of preventive measures.
