Portuguese striker Tiago Tomás will return to Sporting Lisbon after a season and a half at Stuttgart, a club which has decided not to place an option to buy on the footballer.

“We have decided not to activate the agreed purchase option for Tiago. This is mainly for financial reasons. From a sporting point of view, Tiago was a very important player for us,” explained sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth.

Tiago Tomás, 20, has been loaned to the German club until January 2022, with an option to buy for €15 million, according to media reports.

“His performances over the last two seasons have greatly contributed to VfB’s retention in the League. We wish him all the best for the rest of his career,” added the Stuttgart manager.

This season, the club contested the play-off with Hamburg, winning both home (3-0) and away (3-1), with Tiago Tomás used as a substitute on both occasions.

At Stuttgart, a club that had already recruited the Portuguese Gil Dias during the winter mercato, the Leonese striker made 46 appearances and scored eight goals.
