To Lisbon by train or boat? Uber launches pilot project on the South Bank

The initiative called Uber Commute, running until June 30, offers a 50% discount (up to two euros) on 10 trips per person for journeys to all train and boat stations on the south bank and vice versa.

In a statement, the company explains that the Uber Commute initiative will be exclusively available in Uber Green, where vehicles are 100% electric, and Uber Share, Uber’s shared travel option, with the goal of promoting more sustainable, efficient, and economical mobility for all users.

The aim of this pilot project, according to the company, is to encourage residents to leave their cars at home and choose a multimodal solution that prioritizes the use of public transportation.

Uber notes that the choice of the south bank — covering the municipalities of Almada, Seixal, Barreiro, Montijo, Moita, Palmela, and Setúbal — arises because it is one of the main gateways to Lisbon via the 25 de Abril Bridge, which records over 75,000 vehicles daily and has high congestion levels, especially during peak hours, in addition to more than 37,000 vehicles that enter Lisbon daily via the Vasco da Gama Bridge.

“We believe public transport is the backbone of cities and we want to be an effective complement to urban mobility, offering convenient and sustainable solutions for the first and last mile of Portuguese commutes. Combining Uber with public transport is essential to improving city life quality and contributing to making them more sustainable, clean, and uncongested,” explains Francisco Vilaça, General Manager of Uber Portugal.

Uber Commute, according to the manager, is a concrete example of how the company can support a lifestyle that is less dependent on cars, more affordable, and aligned with current environmental challenges.

The company ensures that this model has already shown positive results in other major cities like Madrid, London, Los Angeles, and various cities in Germany, where Uber works as an efficient complement to collective transport, contributing to a more integrated mobility ecosystem.

In addition to promoting the replacement of private cars with shared and multimodal mobility solutions, in conjunction with public transport, this initiative is part of a broader strategy by Uber to establish itself as a reference partner in sustainable mobility in Portugal.

In Portugal, Uber has already invested 5 million euros to promote the transition to green mobility and aims to double this amount in the coming years.

More than 30% of kilometers traveled by Uber in Portugal are in electric vehicles, according to the company.

A new pilot phase is already planned for October in another Portuguese city.
