The second Japanese index, the Topix, was also down by 0.46% to 2,839.70 points at 09:21 local time (01:21 in mainland Portugal).
The Nikkei index reflects the unweighted average of the 225 leading stocks on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, while the Topix index includes the values of the 1,600 largest publicly traded companies.
