The second Japanese indicator, the Topix, was also on the rise, increasing by 0.12% to 2,778.78 points at 09:15 local time (01:50 in mainland Portugal).
The Nikkei index reflects the unweighted average of the top 225 stocks on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, while the Topix index comprises the shares of the 1,600 largest listed companies.
