Torres Vedras exhibits photographs and the archive of photographer Eduardo Gageiro

The exhibition features photographs, documents, awards, and photographic equipment from the municipal collection of Eduardo Gageiro, acquired this year by the municipality located in the Lisbon district.

Included in the exhibition is the photograph ‘Calvário e o Relatório da Operação ‘Fim Regime’,’ with a dedication from Captain Salgueiro Maia to the photographer.

The exhibition was inaugurated on April 25 as part of the municipal program celebrating the Carnation Revolution.

Earlier this year, the Torres Vedras City Council decided to acquire the archive of photographer Eduardo Gageiro for 250 thousand euros, having previously spent 103 thousand euros on its storage and conservation, which was deducted from the acquisition cost.

The collection reflects the photojournalist and photographer’s work and also highlights his role as a collector of photography-related objects, encompassing its history and technical evolution.

The archive consists of a collection of photography and iconography from the 19th and 20th centuries, containing 3,787 documents, including photographic prints on paper, with a strong emphasis on portraits by renowned national and international studios and photographers, along with glass and film negatives and slides.

It also includes a specialized photography library with over 200 volumes, a collection of about 700 photographic and cinematographic devices with various accessories dating from the late 19th century to the 21st century, including some used by Eduardo Gageiro and donations from other photographers.

The collection also comprises approximately 300 framed and canvas-printed photographic prints by Eduardo Gageiro that were part of his exhibitions over the years, more than 300 awards and decorations, and his personal archive, including correspondence with institutions and distinguished personalities related to his professional activities.

Eduardo Gageiro was one of the photographers who documented the April 25, 1974, revolution and was the first to arrive at Lisbon’s Terreiro do Paço after the revolution.

During the dictatorship, he captured images depicting the poor living conditions of a large portion of the Portuguese population, experiencing several instances of arrest due to his images that were deemed inconvenient by the regime.

He worked as a photojournalist in various national press organizations, served as a correspondent for the Associated Press, and was a photographer for the Assembly of the Republic and the Presidency of the Republic, which awarded him a decoration in 2004.

Eduardo Gageiro received numerous national and international awards, including the World Press Photo award in 1975.
