Tourism of Portugal calls for balance between the sector and the quality of life of residents

The entity regards the date as “a crucial opportunity to highlight the fundamental role of the sector as a driver of economic, social, cultural, and political development globally, and to underscore its essential contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.”

The focus on sustainable transformation by Turismo de Portugal (TdP) involves promoting quality education, investing in sustainable infrastructures, and encouraging innovation, technology adoption, and entrepreneurship.

“The aim is to promote increasingly intelligent management of territory and visitor circulation. Our main goal is to find a balance between tourism dynamics and residents’ quality of life, ensuring the sector generates a net positive impact,” noted TdP.

To achieve this goal, it is important “to bet on tourism products that encourage the dispersal of flows to less explored areas,” explaining that by developing “new points of interest and alternative routes,” tourism pressure on the territory is balanced, and “wealth and employment creation in all regions of the country” is boosted, promoting more cohesive and sustainable development, according to the entity.

For TdP, the “priority is clear” and involves “progressing in the value chain, energizing the sector in periods of less activity, and fostering development in regions” with less tourism presence.

“Recently, funding contracts were signed for 37 tourism projects in the interior, precisely to strengthen the sector’s competitiveness and sustainability across the national territory,” it highlighted.

For the President of Turismo de Portugal, Carlos Abade, “tourism is positive, as long as it is good for people. Hence, the objective is to make this activity a catalyst for positive impacts on territories, the environment, and communities.”

The President of Turismo de Portugal noted that to “materialize this vision,” various initiatives have been created, “such as the Empresas Turismo 360º Program, a pioneering initiative designed to equip the business fabric to integrate ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles into its activity.”

“Our main objective is to ensure that tourism is consolidated as a driving force for positive transformation in our society, a pillar for economic growth and national cohesion, and a guardian that protects and appreciates the unique resources of our territory,” he highlighted.

Carlos Abade also stated that the goal is to “build a sector that is a shared source of pride for all Portuguese and an inspiration for those who visit us, to position Portugal in the top 10 ranking of the most competitive countries in the world in tourism.”
