“Trade war”. Olive export will decrease with Trump’s tariffs

The President of the United States has announced a 20% tariff on all products from the European Union, a move that Antonio de Mora claims will exacerbate the impact of a 2018 tariff on black olives, potentially eliminating exports and severely affecting green olives.

The Secretary-General highlighted in a statement that “black olive tariffs will increase from 31% to 51% with the new 20% addition,” while for green olives, “an additional 20% is now added.”

“Key competitors are outside the European Union, and the tariff applied to countries like Egypt, Turkey, or Morocco is half of what it is here, making it impossible to compete on price,” Antonio de Mora explained.

De Mora emphasized that “since 2018, commercial efforts have been made to introduce olives into other markets, but much work remains.”

Efforts have been made to enter the Southeast Asian market, although “it is difficult to introduce a product that is not known” in that region, added Antonio de Mora.

The Commissioner noted that “markets do not open up in the short term, and this is not a solution for the sector at this time.”
