The Infrastructure of Portugal (IP) announced today that certain sections near the Grilo Tunnel in the Lisbon district may still face speed limitations as final works continue.
The construction activities, which were conducted during nighttime hours with traffic closures from 10 PM to 6 AM, were extended until this Friday due to the blackout experienced on the Iberian Peninsula on April 28.
The Grilo Tunnel project, budgeted at 14 million euros, commenced on July 8, 2024, with an estimated duration of nine months. The works aim to improve the drainage system, lay a new pavement, and replace lighting, ventilation, and fire-fighting systems.
Additional installations in the tunnel include hazardous materials detection systems, speed control radars, vehicle counting and classification systems, and video monitoring.
On April 21, IP restored traffic on the four lanes of the gallery in the Sacavém/Algés direction, and by April 30, the four lanes in the opposite direction, Algés/Sacavém, were also opened for daytime use.
Since then, “some restrictions remain at night,” as work continues inside the galleries.
The Grilo Tunnel, inaugurated in 1998, is located on the Olival Basto/Sacavém section of the IC17/CRIL, currently accommodating an average daily traffic of over 115,000 vehicles.
