A collision between a heavy goods vehicle and a bus resulted in “a total of 40 injured,” including three seriously injured and 37 with minor injuries, as reported by Captain João Romano of the Santarém GNR in the latest update.
“One of the seriously injured is the driver of the passenger vehicle,” stated Romano this afternoon at the scene, noting he could not confirm whether the other two seriously injured individuals were also on the bus.
According to João Romano, “the three seriously injured victims are not in life-threatening conditions” and were all transported by ambulance to different hospitals.
The two vehicles involved in the accident were “traveling in opposite directions” on Estrada Nacional 3 (EN3), added the GNR captain.
The alert for the accident was given at 2:23 PM, leading to the closure of traffic in both directions.
A total of 90 operatives, supported by 41 vehicles, were mobilized to the site, according to information available on the website of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection.
In a statement, Jerónimo Martins disclosed that the accident this afternoon involved “the transport service,” which was externally contracted and included 41 of the group’s employees.
The employees had departed from Santarém and were heading to the logistics distribution center in Azambuja, the group added.
Expressing regret over the incident, Jerónimo Martins said it is “closely monitoring the developments with concern,” also noting that it dispatched its “teams of doctors, nurses, psychologists, and human resources” to the site.
