The headline of today’s edition of DN indicates that, taking into account inflation, the real costs of Carris for maintaining its electric infrastructure and fleet will decrease by 28% and 9.3%, respectively, between 2021 and 2024.
However, in a statement sent to the media in response to the DN article, Carris “reiterates that any insinuation of disinvestment in maintenance is false.”
The maintenance activities cost exceeded 24.6 million euros in the past, reflecting a 32.7% increase compared to 2020, the company highlighted.
Additionally, Carris argued that the total expenditure on maintenance and investment rose by 59% in the same period, reaching 45.3 million euros.
In both cases, the company makes no mention of the inflation’s impact.
Carris’s electric infrastructure includes the elevators, such as the one at Glória, which derailed on September 3, resulting in 16 deaths and around 20 injuries, involving both Portuguese and foreign nationals, and is currently under investigation.
“We have increased Carris’s budget by 30%,” stated Carlos Moedas, the current mayor of Lisbon and a candidate in the upcoming local elections, on Monday.
In the first debate organized by SIC with candidates for the Lisbon mayoral election on October 12, Socialist Alexandra Leitão claimed the statement “is not true” regarding expenditure on elevator maintenance.
In response, the Social Democrat added that the elevator maintenance contract originated from a previous Carris administration, appointed by the PS, valued at 900,000 euros, which was increased to 1.2 million euros, but “had no bidders” in the public tender.
The Government authorized on Monday the reinforcement of the Investigation and Prevention Office for Aircraft and Railway Accidents (GPIAAF) staff, allowing for the inclusion of three specialized railway accident investigators.
Under ordinance no. 10832/2025 – published in the Official Gazette and effective from today – the executive orders “the allocation of three investigators for railway accident investigations, enabling GPIAAF to hire the required specialized technicians to conduct investigations into railway accidents and incidents as per European and national legislation.”
The diploma is signed by the Ministers of State and Finance, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, and Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz.
