Train traffic on the Cascais Line remains restricted and with reduced supply

Train traffic on the Cascais Line remains restricted today, with reduced supply and stops at all stations, after having resumed on Tuesday night following a breakdown in an electrical substation, CP said.

A source from CP – Comboios de Portugal told Lusa that trains between Cais do Sodré and Algés stations resumed running on Tuesday night, but that “not all the usual trains are running as the problem has not been fully resolved”.

“We’ve had to reduce the supply, there are only six trains during rush hour and three an hour outside rush hour, with stops at all the stations,” said the source, who couldn’t specify the average normal circulation.

Train traffic on the Cascais Line has been suspended since 08:10 on Tuesday between Cais do Sodré (Lisbon) and Algés (Oeiras) stations due to a fault in an electrical substation.

In a note posted on the social network Facebook on Tuesday, the Lisbon Fire Brigade Regiment revealed that it had received an alert at 08:08 for “a lot of smoke at the Cais do Sodré substation, with an immediate cut in the lines between Cais do Sodré and Alcântara”, and that the fire was extinguished at 08:53.

Around 500 people had to be taken off two trains, one in the Lisbon-Algés direction and the other in the Algés-Lisbon direction.

According to the Sapadores, around 30 passengers were also removed from a train that had to stop in front of the old FIL, in the Algés-Lisbon direction.

On the Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) website, the company states that following the outbreak of a fire at the Cais do Sodré electrical substation, which forced the suspension of rail traffic on the stretch between Cais do Sodré and Algés Stations, “the damage was identified” and IP’s maintenance teams “implemented a solution that allowed rail traffic to be restored on this stretch”.

“In view of the extent of the damage, rail traffic on the Cascais Line, and in particular on this section, will proceed with some limitations, and it is not yet possible to give a date for rail traffic to be restored to normal,” the note reads.

According to the company, “until the situation is normalized, the supply of rail traffic on the Cascais Line will be adjusted”.

Traffic on the Cascais line was restored in the early evening, but with limitations
