A transgender inmate, previously involved in violent incidents, was transferred this Friday afternoon from the Tires women’s prison to the high-security prison in Monsanto.
This development was confirmed by the National Union of Prison Guard Corps (SNCGP) to Notícias ao Minuto, which described the decision as “a great victory”.
On the past Monday, five prison guards were injured in a fire set by the inmate, who allegedly ignited her mattress and some belongings in her cell.
Two weeks prior to the fire, the same inmate had assaulted a prison guard at Santa Cruz do Bispo. At that time, Frederico Morais, the union’s president, had already alerted the director-general of prison services that the inmate should be placed in Monsanto prison or a prison hospital. However, she was only transferred to Tires.
In light of the aggression incidents, the SNCGP even threatened to strike if the Ministry of Justice or the Directorate-General of Reintegration and Prison Services (DGRSP) did not take action.
The woman, with an extensive criminal record, has spent the last 35 years in and out of prison and has been in a women’s prison since 2022 when she expressed her intention to change gender.
She is serving an eight-year sentence for multiple thefts. Before being placed in a women’s prison, she changed her name but reportedly has not undergone gender reassignment surgery. Meanwhile, according to the SNCGP, the woman now wants to revert her gender change to become a man again.
