The European Commission announced today the initiation of infringement procedures by sending formal notification letters to Portugal and eight other European Union (EU) countries, including Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Finland, Malta, Poland, and Slovenia. These countries have not fully communicated the transposition measures of the directive that updates legislation on the land transport of dangerous goods.
EU member states had until June 30 to incorporate the provisions of the directive into their national legislation. As these nine countries failed to communicate their measures, they are required to do so within two months. Otherwise, Brussels may proceed with a reasoned opinion.
The directive modernizes EU regulations concerning the land transport of dangerous goods, reflecting the latest scientific and technical developments, and covers both international and national operations.
The legislation applies to all transport operations, both domestic and international, conducted within the EU, aiming to ensure a high and uniform level of safety.
