Tree fell on top of two cars in the Lisbon parish of Ajuda

Between midnight and 7:00 am, 26 incidents were recorded, including 19 floods in public and private spaces, three fallen trees, one structure collapse, one cladding fall, and two sewage-related situations, according to the Lisbon Fire Brigade.

The source reported a 4:50 am alert about a fallen tree on two cars on Rua Nova do Calhariz in the Ajuda district, with no casualties reported.

The Second Circular was also closed to traffic near the airport around 6:00 am due to flooding but has since reopened.

As of around 7:30 am, the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) reported 86 incidents between midnight and 6:00 am due to heavy rainfall from depression Claudia, primarily involving floods.

Pedro Araújo from ANEPC stated, “Between midnight and 6:00 am today, 86 occurrences were recorded, 68 of which involved flooding on roads, garages, and elevator shafts, but without causing any casualties or displacements.”

The most affected regions were Greater Lisbon, the Setúbal Peninsula, and the Oeste, with 43 incidents in Setúbal, 19 in Greater Lisbon, and 13 in the Oeste.

Among the 86 incidents recorded, primarily from 3:00 am to 6:00 am, 68 were floods, six were fallen trees, and four involved landslides.

“These incidents involved 184 operatives, supported by 56 units,” said Pedro Araújo.

The Portuguese mainland and the Madeira archipelago have been affected by depression Claudia since Wednesday, experiencing strong rain, wind, and sea disturbances, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).

IPMA upgraded the rain warning from orange to red, indicating the most severe level, until 9:00 am today, for potentially heavy and persistent precipitation.

In the districts of Viseu, Porto, Guarda, Santarém, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga, the orange warning will remain in effect until 9:00 am due to “heavy and persistent precipitation.”

The warning for Évora, Beja, and Portalegre extends until noon. Faro is under an orange warning until 3:00 pm for the same reasons.

Faro, Setúbal, Lisbon, and Beja are also under a yellow warning until the weekend due to sea disturbances, with the possibility of “southwest waves between 4 and 5.5 meters, especially in the leeward area.”

The orange warning is issued by IPMA when there is “a moderate to high-risk weather situation,” and the yellow warning is for a risk to specific meteorological-dependent activities.
