Although there was a pre-opening on Wednesday with the screening of ‘In the Hand of Dante’ by director Julian Schnabel, the main program of the festival takes place between today and Saturday.
New to this edition, screenings will be held at Teatro Ibérico, named ‘The Theater’ with a capacity of 165 people, and at the former Convento do Beato church, now converted into an event space with 300 seats available, as indicated by the organizers.
The event will feature premieres, including some sold-out sessions such as ‘Bugonia’ by Yorgos Lanthimos, ‘Ritas’, a documentary by Oswaldo Santana and Karen Harley about Brazilian artist Rita Lee, ‘Honeyjoon’ by Lilian T. Mehrel, and the Portuguese series ‘Lua Vermelha: Nova Geração’.
“Eleanor the Great,” Scarlett Johansson’s debut feature film, the documentary ‘Are we good’ about comedian Marc Maron, with director Steven Feinartz attending in Lisbon, and Portuguese films ‘Terra Vil’ by Luís Campos and ‘A memória do cheiro das coisas’ by António Ferreira, are also part of the film program.
The Unicorn Factory Lisbon will host talks and podcast presentations, featuring actresses Kim Cattrall, Meg Ryan, Edie Falco, Veronica Falcón, and actors Giancarlo Esposito and Ed Westwick.
Although initially announced, producer and screenwriter Ava DuVernay will not be present.
Other attendees include director Augusto Fraga and some of the cast from the series ‘Rabo de Peixe’, actor Welket Bungué, musician Dino d’Santiago, comedians Guilherme Geirinhas and Ricardo Araújo Pereira, actress Daniela Ruah, and presenter Catarina Furtado.
This year’s organizers promise a more community-inclusive program, not limited to entertainment industry professionals.
At Unicorn Factory Lisbon, in free circulation areas, there will be programming featuring gastronomy, live music, and crafts, concluding on Saturday with a performance by MXGPU, a collaboration between musicians Moulinex and GPU Panic.
The Tribeca Festival was founded in New York in 2001 by actor Robert De Niro and producer Jane Rosenthal, originally as a meeting place for independent cinema and new talent. It has evolved into a ‘storytelling’ event focused on sharing stories in different formats.
In 2024, the festival took place in Europe for the first time, with Lisbon chosen for the expansion strategy, in partnership with TV station SIC, OPTO — both part of the Impresa group — and the Lisbon City Council.
According to the organizers, the budget for this second edition, including public support amounts, will only be “shared” once the festival concludes.
Among the two founders of the New York Tribeca festival, producer Jane Rosenthal is confirmed to attend.
