Trio that ran over PSP on April 25 accused of attempted murder

Three young individuals who ran over a Public Security Police (PSP) officer after ignoring a stop order on the 25 de Abril Bridge in Lisbon have been charged with several crimes, including attempted murder.

In a statement released Wednesday, the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the District of Lisbon announced that charges were brought against three defendants for the crimes of dangerous driving of a road vehicle, resistance and coercion against an official, qualified attempted homicide, possession of a prohibited weapon, minor drug trafficking, disobedience, and qualified damage.

The incident occurred on June 2, 2025, when the youths ignored a PSP officer’s stop order and fled, driving at speeds above the limit on the 25 de Abril Bridge and various streets in Lisbon.

“During the pursuit, they violated several traffic rules, often driving against the flow of traffic, an action that culminated in running over the PSP officer who was pursuing them,” the statement noted.

Initially, the officer, who was on a motorcycle, was thrown to the ground and then run over by the suspects’ car, suffering multiple injuries, including trauma to the right rib cage, rib fractures causing a punctured lung and liver, and multiple abrasions and wounds.

According to the prosecutor’s office, two of the defendants have been in preventive detention since June 6 and 18, while the third is subject to non-custodial measures.

Suspects Disposed of Weapon and Drugs Before Running Over

The day after the crime, the PSP reported that a 22-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl were detained on suspicion of being involved in the officer’s hit-and-run incident.

At that time, the PSP indicated that the officer was hospitalized at Lisbon’s Hospital de Santa Maria in “stable” condition but with several injuries, notably to the rib cage, lungs, liver, head, and left leg.

According to authorities, the driver ignored a stop order at the Toll Plaza of the 25 de Abril Bridge in Almada during an inspection operation and was later intercepted in Lisbon’s São Domingos de Benfica neighborhood.

At that moment, “in an unusual move, the suspect driver reversed abruptly and violently, striking a police motorcycle and running over an officer, passing over the body at least twice.”

The PSP’s National Directorate reported that the officer managed two gunshots, but these were insufficient to deter “the hostile behavior,” with two men managing to flee on foot.

Before the run-over incident, the driver tossed a firearm and two plastic bags containing a suspect substance out the vehicle’s window, according to the PSP.

“At the scene [of the run-over], with the assistance of a passerby, a third occupant of the suspect vehicle, a 16-year-old female, was apprehended and intercepted,” notes the PSP in the statement.

In the early hours of the following morning, “after several police efforts,” the PSP of Faro, with support from the National Republican Guard (GNR), located and intercepted in Albufeira, Algarve, a 22-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman.

According to PSP spokesperson Sérgio Soares, as explained to Lusa, the woman might “not be involved in the case” since “the officer who was run over perceived that it was two men who fled.”
