Trump and trade war: “Gasoline is more important than baby carriages”

“The numbers we saw are not Trump’s, but Biden’s. We arrived in January, and these are quarterly numbers, representing a policy I was radically against,” said the President in an interview with NBC.

In a recent interview, former President Donald Trump acknowledged that his tariff policies might lead to higher prices for certain products. However, he maintained that the American public should accept some level of austerity.

“Gasoline is a thousand times more important than a stroller. You don’t need to have 35 dolls. A child can have two, three, four, and save a lot of money. We don’t need to feed the beast”, he stressed.

Trump expressed confidence that the economy would gradually improve once the short-term impacts of his decisions faded. He dismissed the idea that these changes would trigger a recession.

“Everything will be fine, and it’s true that anything can happen, but I think we’ll have the best economy in the history of our country”, he added.

The former President of the United States stated that the positive aspects of the American economy are a result of his policies, while attributing negative outcomes to actions by his successor, Joe Biden.

Despite the growing tension reflected in economic barometers, official indicators remain stable with a 4.2% unemployment rate in April and inflation at 2.3% in March, slightly above the Federal Reserve’s target.

Regarding Beijing, against whom Trump has imposed a 145% tariff on “made in China” products, he commented that they had essentially “broken trade relations by imposing such high customs tariffs”. He mentioned that this “is not a problem,” adding that he intends to reduce these tariffs “to a certain point.”

In the interview, Trump also asserted that he would not seek a third term in the 2028 elections. He identified his Vice President, JD Vance, and Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, as potential successors.

“There are a lot of people throwing their hat in for 2028, but that’s not what I’m looking for. I want to have a great four years and hand over power to someone, hopefully, a great Republican, who continues (…). I think four years is enough time to do something truly spectacular”, he assured.
