“This would be the perfect time for Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell to cut interest rates,” wrote Donald Trump in a message on the Truth Social network, claiming that inflation has dropped in the United States since he returned to power in January.
Trump’s call came minutes after Powell delivered a speech at a forum in front of an audience of economic journalists.
The U.S. President also took the opportunity to criticize Powell, repeating complaints that he has been slow to respond to the country’s problems.
“He’s always been late. But now he can change the image,” wrote Trump.
“Energy prices are falling, interest rates are coming down, inflation is decreasing, even eggs dropped 69%, and employment is increasing, all in just two months — a big win for America! Cut interest rates, Jerome, and stop playing politics,” challenged the President.
In another message on Truth Social, also about tariffs, Trump stated that he had a “very productive discussion” about customs tariffs with Vietnam’s main leader, the General Secretary of the Communist Party, To Lam.
“Vietnam wants to reduce tariffs to zero if they can reach an agreement with the United States. I thanked him on behalf of my country and said I hope to meet him in the near future,” the U.S. President wrote on Truth Social.
On Wednesday, in what Trump called “Liberation Day,” he imposed a 10% tariff on imports from 184 countries and territories, including the EU.
For China, he announced a tariff of 34%, adding to the existing 20%, bringing the total to 54%.
The base tariff of 10% will take effect on Saturday, while additional country-specific tariffs will come into effect next Wednesday.
