Two men, aged 25 and 26, were arrested on Thursday due to disturbances at UBBO shopping center in Lisbon while the Public Security Police (PSP) assisted a woman.
“While officers were assisting a woman who felt unwell at UBBO shopping center, a group of people gathered to observe the situation,” stated the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the Public Security Police (Cometlis).
The source added, “To ensure proper conditions for assistance and safeguard the woman’s dignity, officers requested those present to move back to widen the safety perimeter.”
The first instance involved an individual who “remained actively disrupting medical assistance.” Authorities repeatedly asked him to move, but he refused, “insulting the police and showing complete disrespect for the ongoing intervention.”
“Faced with these insults, officers requested identification, which he refused. Due to this refusal and the disturbance created, the suspect was removed to facilitate identification without compromising medical aid to the woman,” the statement read.
During the police intervention, several individuals recorded the event on their phones, which will be included in the case files.
The second incident occurred when another suspect, “also recording, repeatedly obstructed the officers’ path, hindering their actions.”
“The recording deliberately focused on the police officers’ faces, not their intervention,” Cometlis explained. Despite being warned, he persisted in recording identities, attempting to coerce the police.
The arrests resulted from insults and threats, with one suspect “actively resisting police action and attempting to escape arrest.”
Both detainees were taken to the police station in the shopping center and released after legal formalities. Their court appearance is scheduled for a later date.
