The river beaches of Argaçosa and Lumiar, in Carreço, Viana do Castelo, have been banned from bathing since Wednesday, due to lack of water quality, the local port captain said today.

Contacted by the Lusa agency, Captain Silva Lampreia said that the river beach of Argaçosa, guarded balenar zone, and the beach of Lumiar (maritime, not guarded) are not recommended for bathing, since 10:00 on Wednesday.

The decision, articulated with the health delegate, the Chamber of Viana do Castelo and the captaincy, was taken following the analyzes carried out regularly on the river and sea waters of the municipality revealed a “parameter outside the quality framework”, related to the presence of the bacterium ‘Escherichia coli’.

According to Captain Silva Lampreia, “both beaches do not have a blue flag”.

The official said that, in the case of the fluvial beach of Argaçosa, because it is guarded, the red flag was raised.

At Lumiar beach, in Carreço, signs were placed advising against bathing in the sea.

Captain Silva Lampreia added that, “according to information from the Chamber of Viana do Castelo, new water samples would be taken today on those beaches”.

“We are waiting for the results of the new analyzes to resume the normal operation of the bathing areas,” he said.

Lusa contacted the municipality, but has so far received no response.
