The two defendants, Ângelo Guterres, aged 31, and his brother, Fábio Guterres, aged 25, were charged with two racially motivated homicide crimes, which occurred last November in Praias-do-Sado. One of these resulted in the death of Indian citizen Gurpreet Singh, aged 24.
The crime allegedly stemmed from a disagreement involving Ângelo Guterres and a group of Indian citizens at a café, with the defendant claiming the altercation arose because his mother was harassed by other immigrants of the same origin.
Shortly after the incident, Ângelo Guterres reportedly asked his brother, Fábio Guterres, to bring him the firearm from their home, which he then used to shoot into a house occupied by a group of Indian citizens, fatally injuring Gurpreet Singh.
Accompanied by his brother, Ângelo Guterres also went to the back of the building where other occupants had fled and fired two more shots, hitting another immigrant in the shoulder.
In a summary of the court ruling, presiding magistrate Tiago Prudente stated that the prison sentence for Ângelo Guterres “could not be less” due to the severity of the crimes committed.
He also noted that the other defendant, Fábio Guterres, although unaware of his brother’s motivations, not only retrieved the weapon but also accompanied Ângelo in committing the crimes, doing nothing to prevent them.
